It was used as an accel erated method to evaluate the RCF performance as many more stress cycles can be achieved in a fixed contact area. The coating specimen was fixed by a collet with gear shape. The bearing with 11 uniformly distributed balls, which was fixed in the cup assembly, was used as the paired contact element. These lower balls were fabricated by AISI52100 steel with an average surface roughnessof 0.012 m and Rockwell C hardness of 60 HRC. The diameter of each ball is 11 mm. This type of bearing is widely and practically used in different industries in China. Although the bearing with 3 equispaced balls is often used as the paired contact element under rolling contact conditions, the selection of the bearing with 11 balls in the present work may simulate the actual working conditions of coatings. The rotation velocity of the lower bearing was controlled by the spindle driving motor and its magnitude could be monitored by the speed sensor .
