Subject: one shown to be more conservative than that gen. Any of the applicable ice accretions (or a composite accretion representing a combination of accretions) may be used to show compliance with a particular subpart B requirement if it is either the ice accretion identified in the requirement or one shown to be more conservative than that.Никак не могу сформулировать предложение. То есть, сам конец никак не вяжется с текстом, как по мне. one shown to be more conservative than that |

one shown to be more conservative than that. = one[=a requirement] [that is] shown to be more conservative than that [= the above mentioned requirement]. |

'Conservative' seems a slightly strange word to use with 'ice accretion'. It usually means 'opposed to change' or 'keeping things as they are' (as well as having a few other meanings), of course. However, there is an expression in English -- 'a conservative estimate' (also 'a conservative figure') -- where 'conservative' means 'moderate' or even 'slightly low', as in: 'Zimbabwe has one of the highest inflation rates in the world. Inflation in the country is expected to be 70,000,000% this year -- and that's a conservative estimate'. Therefore I wonder whether 'more conservative' here could mean something like 'smaller'/'more moderate'/'less serious'? However, I'm not an aviation expert, and this just a guess! It may be a perfectly normal word to use in an aviation/ice accretion context, with its own special meaning. I'm just offering this as an idea. |

conservative is a requirement (see 19:27) |

asocialite: Hmm, you could be right. From a grammar point of view, logically 'one' here could refer to either 'an ice accretion' or 'a requirement'. Based on the word order, I reckon it's 55-60% likely to refer to 'an ice accretion' and 40-45% likely to refer to 'a requirement'. Strictly speaking, if the author wanted it to refer to 'requirement', he should have put both the 'either' and the 'or' in different positions. However, the word 'conservative' is more likely to be used with a word like 'requirement' than it is with 'ice accretion', and it could be that he's just using imperfect grammar. The English generally is very good. As I'm not really sure which of the two 'conservative' refers to, I think I'll "chicken out" and leave it to others to work out, otherwise I'll just complicate matters! |

PS: It may well refer to 'requirement' rather than 'ice accretion' as that would probably make more sense. The author could have removed all ambiguity by saying 'a requirement' instead of 'one', of course. I won't be employing him to draw up any contracts for me.... |
