1. I, XXX, hereby certify that on the date and at the place specified above, I duly solemnized marriage in accordance with the provisions of the Marriage Act 1961 between the parties specified above. 2. Marriage was solemnized between the parties particulars of whom are given below 3. Signature of Celebrant. 4. Before accepting copies, sight unaltered original. The original has a coloured background. |
Linch! |

The celebrant in a marriage ceremony is usually either: * the priest who conducts the ceremony (in the case of a church (ie, Christian) wedding); or * the registrar who conducts the ceremony (in the case of a registry office (ie, non-church) wedding); or * some other person legally qualified to conduct marriage ceremonies (for example, in the case of muslim and other non-Christian religions). 'Civil rites' means the procedure(s) laid down by the law for events such as christenings, weddings, divorces, burials etc -- for example, who must say and do what, and in what order -- which must be followed in order for the christening (or whatever) to be legally valid. 'Rites' just means 'set procedures'; it's not related to 'civil rights'. |
Johnstephenson, thanks a lot! Does ' civil' in this case mean 'without church'? |

Yes -- outside the church, as opposed to religious rites. |
Thank you again, John!Could you, please, explain to me what UNALTERED original is? |
Спасибо, AsIs! |

Yes, it probably means something like 'Check that the original hasn't been altered and then, that any copies are identical to the original'. 'sight' wouldn't normally be used here in UK English, but may be perfectly normal in 'Ozzy' English -- I don't know. The Ozzies are a funny lot: they're all descended from British and Irish criminals, you know ;-) -- as we like to keep reminding them.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penal_transportation > Australia |
