Sportsman may refer to: Sportsperson, someone who enjoys sport |

An athlete (American and British English) or sportsman (British English) is a person who competes in one or more sports that involve physical strength, speed and/or endurance. |

Uh uh, NEVER use sportsman to mean athlete. Messi and Mayweather are athletes, not sportsmen. ) |
A sportsman in actual usage (not in Wiki cut-n-paste lol) is someone who partakes in outdoor activities, like hunting, boating, fishing, etc... |

In the US, they use the word ATHLETE all the time. Note that ЗАПИСКИ ОХОТНИКА by Turgenev is translated as A SPORTSMAN'S SKETCHES. Also check this out: Chris K. (Tacoma WA, US - English/US): http://forum.wordreference.com/threads/athlete-vs-sportsperson.2336276/ Personally I NEVER use the word SPORTSMAN. I prefer ATHLETE. |
Yes, Tamerlane. Please never translate спортсмен as sportsman. ) No Brit or American would use it in such fashion, at least in 2016. ) |
Not only athletes who participate in the Olympics, there are also other sportsmen who don’t earn a huge amount when they’re actively involved in sports. However, nowadays, the sportspeople earn a massive amount of money and hence they don’t need to worry about earning a living after they retire from sports. Nevertheless, the concerns of this article will deal with some sportsmen or athlete who have earned a lot after retirement. "http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/picturegalleries/11561664/Britains-richest-sportsmen-2015-including-Lewis-Hamilton-Wayne-Rooney-and-Andy-Murray.html" This is a money list of athletes (footballers) and non-athletes (race car drivers) who participate in sports, hence the word - "sportsmen". ) A bit different. No English person would call Andy Murray a "sportsman" unless he fished, hunted, or were assigned to a larger classification like this. ) |
"Biscuit" sometimes translated to "бисквит", for some reason.
Посмотрите здесь: gengo (San Francisco, California, US - American English): An athlete is defined as "a person trained to compete in sports or exercises involving physical strength, speed, or endurance," or "a person who has a natural aptitude for physical activities." We usually use the word athlete to refer to someone who is very involved in sports, and spends a lot of time doing them. We don't use the word sportsman very often, although we often refer to good or bad sportsmanship. |
Here too: http://www.wordreference.com/definition/sportsman WordReference Random House Learner's Dictionary of American English © 2016
100% athletes. |

It's just words, not a big deal. But it was interesting to learn that "sportsman" is such a marginal word for "person engaging in sport actitivies". I thought there was some difference in usage between the US and the UK. |
Для меня "athlete" - настоящая сметана, a "sportsman" - какой-то сметанный продукт (although I do like the word "sportsperson" for some reason). Peace. |
