Не помню правило, и Интернет как-то нечетко реагирует на мои попытки его отыскать:

если в тексте (это не обращение к письму) упоминаются "господа такие-то (фамилия заканчивается на "ин", т.е. -ины), по-английски это Messrs. ... ins?

(здесь речь только о мужчинах)

Допустим, "в нашем городе живёт 75 Ивановых"

а по семьям - "the Ivanov family" or "the Ivanovs"

miko is right with his example, but it depends on:

* their relationship (if there is one) -- ie,
- are they in the same family?
- if so, how exactly are they related -- father and son, brothers or what?
* whether it's in a legal document, the text of a letter, a report or the address on an envelope;
* whether it's the name of a business or private individuals;
* whether it's formal or informal/spoken/colloquial.

Which of these is it?
