подскажите, пож, нужны ли артикли в подписи к картинкам в диссертации
Например. к одной картинке артикли расставлены следующим образом:

EF is the Fermi level, CBM is the conduction band minimum, VBM is the valence band maximum. (left) Band diagram of the AP-type junction. Расстановка артиклей - дело тонкое. Собственно, выбор между a и the может потребовать знания предметной области, которая у Вас довольно узкая...

Articles are often omitted from the captions to pictures and diagrams, also from newspaper headlines and the headings in technical documents. So 'Given numbers' here means 'The given numbers'.

Similarly, a caption under a newspaper photograph showing (say) a suspected criminal might read:
* "Suspect being put into police van"
meaning:
* "THE suspect being put into A police van".

Articles are present in most other types of English text, though.
