если исходить из смысла, то stresses form/originate/take place where defects cause local incompatibilities of inelastic strain (в вашей терминологии - plastic deformation)

научно, я просто привык к другой терминологии;
кстати, Kroner also emphasized that the motion of atoms during plastic deformation is extremely discontinuous (так что plastic deformation подходит)
