В Южной Африке, например, a person of colour (в обиходе -- coloured) -- это человек, которого нельзя однозначно отнести ни к белым (White), ни к африканцам (Black), ни к индийцам (Indian). Во времена апартеида к этой категории относили кого попало -- от китайцев с филиппинцами до потомков межрасовых браков.
