И запомните выражение "под тем-то понимается то-то", оно часто используется (X shall mean/means Y)

so simple but so irritating in Russian:) sometimes i think legal jargon in Russian is worse than in English
maybe its a stupid question, but why the prepostion Под plus the tvor. padezh? (this is a new construction for me)

"Под" - требует вопроса "Чем"? "Кем"? Творительный! ;)

Precious:
i know the general rule of the case and pod needing that case, but i have never seen the whole construction here ... pod datoi .. and that it means jsut "the date" ... shall mean...
why not just say "data"?

Pupil: you have cleared up a LOT of things for me! thank you!

and any idea why said set expression came into existence? (this kind of thing is always interesting to me - always want to know the root of expressions and constructions - makes it easier to remember them and understand their use)

maybe, some idea of underlying meaning.
It is sort of veiled with a term, but when you remove it, you'll find the true sense of it underneath.
looks like enough ground for using pod/under, doesn't it?
