У дочки в учебнике: "She will go to South America the next October" (упражнение на употребление артиклей с именами собственными). Спрашивает меня, зачем тут the. Затрудняюсь с ответом... Учебник Pearson-Longman.
Вроде бы многие носители ошибаются, употребляя next и last в отношении времени. И вроде бы the говорят тогда, когда имеют в виду период такой длины (the next year = с 22 января 2014 по 21 января 2015), но не уверен. В любом случае, сюда это никак не относится.
Буду благодарен за ссылку на полное правило, объясняющее the next October (March etc.).

натрикс, спасибо! Именно так и помню. Но употребляют the в хвост и в гриву и в прошлом, и в будущем. По идее только в прошлом the нужно. Вероятно, в учебнике неудачный пример. Так и скажу, подрывая веру в авторитеты :).

What’s the Trouble? People think next means different things when it modifies a day of the week.

Some people think next Friday means the next Friday that will occur, and other people think next Friday means the Friday in the next week, regardless of what day it is in the current week.

What Should You Do?

There is no definitive meaning for next Friday, and even if there were, using it would still cause confusion. Avoid using next to modify a day of the week. Be more specific.

Sid: Well I'm going down to visit my sister in Virginia next Wednesday, for a week, so I can't park it.

Jerry: This Wednesday?

Sid: No, next Wednesday, week after this Wednesday.

Jerry: But the Wednesday two days from now is the next Wednesday.

Sid: If I meant this Wednesday, I would have said this Wednesday. It's the
week after this Wednesday.

Could you please tell me which one of the following sounds better to you?

1- He is planning to get married next year.
2- He is planning to get married the next year.
.....................
Both sentences sound fine, but have different meanings. The first one means that he is planning to get married the year after this and the second implies that he is planning to get married the year following the one (supposedly) just mentioned (the following year).

С октябрем всё то же самое.

She will go to South America next October.

but...

She went to North America this/last October/year/fall, and she will go to South America THE next October
