Divided highways are what in Britain would be called dual carriageways, in other words roads where traffic in each direction is physically separated. The strip between the two directions is called the median (equivalent to what in Britain would be called the central reservation). Divided highways almost always have at least two lanes in each direction plus a hard shoulder. Divided highways often have on and off ramps (which would be called slip roads in Britain), in which case they are called limited access highways and are equivalent to British motorways.
