Прямое и обратное преобразования Фурье отличаются друг от друга знаком в показателе экспоненты, поэтому одно direct transform, другое inverse transform.
Странно, что имея физтех (МФТИ) background (из вашей анкеты переводчика), вы задаете такие вопросы.

обратная задача- это совсем другое, например решение
уравнения диффузии назад во времени и к Фурье
отношения не имеет.

inverse по словарю- обратная величина, например 1 / x,
или обратная матрица, а reverse- поворот назад, чего
тут не понять ? иногда говорят back fourier transform,
вот тут действительно не поспоришь.
