OFF: leverage vs use gen.

У меня в предложении встретилось "Merchants should make every effort to leverage and use the controls, standards...", озадачило меня и вынудило искать нюансы значений.

В результате нашла вот этот "крик души" какого-то офисного планктона из Коннектикута. Может, кому-то тоже будет интересно:

Professional Jargon

Coworkers use ridiculous terminology. Unnecessary terminology. Terminology that adds little value and just confuses newcomers like me. Examples:

• Products, solutions, service set, solution suite... why not just say services?

• "Let's have a: touchbase, 1:1, conference, catchup, pullup..." why not say meeting?

• Leverage vs use. possibly one of the most annoying ones of all. "Let's leverage all our resources." "Let's leverage the space." "Let's leverage the chair in the corner." (I kid you not, someone actually said that.)

• Capital, funds, balances, liquidity vs money. This one I can be more lenient on, it is the financial services industry. If the eskimos had 32 words for snow, we can have a couple synonyms for cash.

• "Cascade to your teams." Also, delegate, pass on, and inform. They could just say "tell your teams."

• Ping, sametime, message. Clearly our coworkers were not part of the IM generation. From 5th grade on, I would spend hours IMing my friends every day. Not pinging them, sametiming them, or messaging them.

• Space. One of my favorites. "I'm in the commercial space."

• And we can't forget priority. "Guys, this needs to be priority." Notice it's not "this needs to be a priority." It's just priority.

I wonder if people say these kinds of things to sound professional or more in-the-know. To me it just sounds retarted.

считайте, что там только use и никакого leverage
обычная тавтология
например, наше выражение "целиком и полностью" в подавляющем большинстве случаев ничем не отличается от просто "целиком" или просто "полностью"

Что вы, edasi, разница колоссальная! Как сказал другой натив на другом форуме: "use" only has one syllable. "leverage" has three. Sounds wayyyy more intelligent" :))
