Thinking on your feet: Not matter how well you prepare for something, there will be plenty of surprises that is totally unexpected. In a job or visa interview, you can memorize all your answers to all the possible questions beforehand only to find out that the person has asked a totally different set of questions. You are simply dumbfound there with your brain running idle.

Had you participated actively in discussions and other social events, and had you tried to answer repeatedly many "dumb" questions before, you would have developed a skill that enables you to think some answers for almost any unexpected question right at the spot. In America, they call this skill the ability to "think on your feet." In other words, you don't have to sit down, read a book, and think something out slowly, for that will be too late!

То есть по-русски будет нечто очень близкое по смыслу, как ни странно —
выдавать / придумывать:
~ с ходу, ~ не сходя с места, ~ на лету
и чудь дальше по смыслу:
~ не отходя от кассы, ~ с колёс.
