Subject: lounge seating gen. Добрый вечер!Как правильно перевести lounge seating? (текст про услуги ресторана) размещение в зале? Спасибо |
Контексту бы... Seating -- это может быть и расположение сидячих мест, и сидячая мебель, и процесс рассаживания гостей по местам. А lounge, если это в ресторане -- это не основной зал, а "предбанник", обычно с баром. |

Provide guests with access to a variety of food and beverage experiences. At a minimum, provide beverage service and lounge seating, a full service restaurant offering three meals a day and a specialty restaurant.

It's written in quite pretentious (pompous) English, which is often typical of advertisements. To understand it you firstly have to 'translate' it into standard English...... * 'seating' here just means 'chairs'/'seats' (at a table); * 'beverages' is a pompous word for 'drinks'; * 'provide beverage service' just means 'serve drinks' (either at the bar, or via waiters). The phrase 'an x experience' is an annoying, silly expression that has crept into some advertisers' English over the past 10-20 years. It usually just means 'the time spent by a customer doing x' or 'what the customer thinks of the time they spent doing x'. Examples: * 'your holiday experience with us' just means 'the time you spend/spent on holiday with us' -- ie, whether you enjoy/enjoyed it or not, and if so, how much; * 'a driving experience' (in a car advert) just means 'whether/how much (s.o.) enjoys driving (this model of car)'; etc. Therefore...... * 'Provide guests with access to a variety of food and beverage experiences' just means 'Offer various meals and drinks to guests [presumably, via menus] and serve them to them'; * 'unique and imaginative dining experiences' just means 'time spent eating and/or drinking (our) unique and imaginative meals and/or drinks'; * 'external restaurants in the market of the project' here just means 'other restaurants which occupy the same niche of the market', ie offer similar services. If you're translating it into Russian you may have to decide whether to translate it into similarly pompous advertisers' Russian, or just into standard Russian that people can understand! |

'lounge' has different meanings, depending on whether it refers to a restaurant as you say or (in the UK/Ireland/Australia/NZ) a pub or pub-restaurant (=a pub which has been upgraded to a restaurant). The text is written in US rather than UK English (it says 'program' (US) rather than 'programme' (UK)), and it seems to be about Marriott International hotels, which I believe are quite expensive, so I'm assuming it's in an American hotel/leisure complex rather than a pub/pub-restaurant. The lounge in a hotel is normally a room with comfortable seating where guests sit and relax. However, if you're sure that it's talking specifically about a restaurant, it could just mean 'the inside of (a/the) restaurant' (ie, where guests sit and dine). If it's a pub or pub-restaurant, it probably has a more specific meaning -- see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pub#Architecture if interested, also click on 'Русский' in the left-hand column for possible Ru terms. |

johnstephenson, thanks a lot for your detailed replyYou are right, it's about Marriott International, I even managed to find the whole original brochure from where this extract is taken, it's only in English. But after reading some other pages and chapters of this brochure, you can better understand what the extract is about. What was really difficult to translate is "Greatroom". In fact, it's their invention, at least, they believe it's true. To make it clearer for Russian readers, I gave not just a translation but a short explanation of it: "...новое пространство Greatroom, это революционная концепция общественного пространства в отелях сети Marriott International..." I hope, it's correct. As for the pompous language, I chose something between it and standard Russian. I still have one question - describing lounge bars and Greatroom , they call this section "Brand essentials". Am I right to translate "essentials" as "philosophy of the brand"? |
|
link 26.01.2022 16:17 |
Brand essentials here could have either of two meanings: 1) 'characteristics which every Marriott restaurant/hotel must have' (eg, at least two bars, a bidet in every room, a restaurant serving both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals, at least three species of fish on the menu, etc); or 2) 'our brand in a nutshell', ie the essential (basic) facts you need to know about our brand. Looking at the way it's written in your text, I suspect it means 1) here. I've never heard of greatroom (one word) before, but it appears to be a valid North American term. In the UK a great room (two words) was historically the name of a large room in a castle or palace used for dining, dancing and other activities. However, various dictionaries have more modern definitions: * " (N America) Since the 1990s, a large room in a residence usually serving several functions (as of a dining room, living room, and family room)"; * "(Canada, US) A large room in a modern house which combines the functions of a living room, dining room and study". |

johnstephenson, this is what I found regarding "Greatroom", it's from MI hotel design standards....The Lobby and its Public Spaces are reinvented as the MarriottHotel (MH) Greatroom where guests transition seamlessly between Social, Business, Creative and Personal activities through flexible furnishings, the latest technology and innovative F&B. Through great design, the Greatroom experience is flexible and adaptable, social and collaborative, comfortable and stylish. Transition of mood and atmosphere from day to night is key to the success ofthe MH Greatroom, and must be thoughtfully designed and integrated to include dimmable lighting, a quality sound system, wireless access and high definition televisions... Based on it I described "Greatroom" as some kind of space which can be converted according to guests' needs. As for "Brand essentials", I guess I will translate it as "Неотъемлемые составляющие" (some parts which cannot be missed, they are always included). Your help is really appreciated!!! |
