Subject: obsession, infatuation, all-consuming passion gen.
Привет всем!

Возник такой вопрос: в учебнике upper-intermediate в одном из заданий требуется исключить 1 неподходящее слово из трех предложенных в предложении:

For some people doing something that no one else has ever done can become an obsession/infatuation/all-consuming passion.

Честно говоря, сама затрудняюсь, т.к., имхо, логически может подходить каждое из трех.

Есть какие-нибудь идеи? :)

Заранее спасибо! :)

However, it's not as simple as that. I would say in fiction writing all 3 are legal.
But grammar is generally known to kill fun&imagination:((
Besides, it has already been discussed, so read through this:

BTW, asker, what textbook is this?
I wonder what they have in store for the "advanced" level.

Thanks! :)

I've checked out the link you mentioned, Wolverin. :)
Wow! This very sentence being discussed! This means I'm not the only one puzzled by it. :)

:) The title of the book is TOTAL ENGLISH, upper-intermediate. It's a textbook for adult learners of English. I don't know what they have for the advanced level, but some of the exercises make my adult student really puzzled and sometimes even mad as he sometimes finds it difficult to understand the difference in the meaning of such kind of words. Honestly, I'm sometimes puzzled, too. :)

Thanks! :)

FWIW, in my understanding, infatuation is passive (i.e. a person infatuated with smth is least likely to be doing something about their passion) ... hence the response above. ;)
