not an entirely successful photo

Harry, what success is it supposed to be? The phrase most probably means that the photo is not so good, that's it.

basically, the photo sucks!

ЮГ: I'm not too sure that a phrase such as this demands such a rigorous interrogaton of the nuances (assuming, that is, we're not dealing with poetry here). As you know, "not entirely successful" is a sort of stock phrase, which, as far as I know, also goes for "не совсем удачное", without any real allusion to success or lack of it. Yeah, my version is kinda boring, and it's more and fun and interesting to come up with more exotic possibililies; but in my opinion the boring 'straight' translation is okay here.

Yours, boringly
Harry

Dear Harry,

Sorry, but I beg to differ. You seem to misunderstand the word удачное. It does not mean successful in this case (as in many others).

SirReal: I take your point. But note, I wrote "without any real allusion to success or lack of it." So we sort of agree on that. Perhaps you don't fully understand the word "successful'? Like "удачное", it doesn't have to mean, er, "successful' in the strict sense of the word, and, again like "удачное" it suggests something good, positive, a good result, etc (correct me if I'm wrong"). Yes, of course, one can translate the phrase as"it sucks", "not flattering", or, maybe "that photo ain't too hot", but that's straying into slang territory. Fun to use, and beloved of non-native English speakers, maybe, but hardly an appropriate translation of the everyday word "удачное".

Also, the lack of context doesn't help. Who's saying it to whom? Putin to Obama, or two dudes in the Bronx?

My own humble offering takes its cue from the boring fact that "не совсем удачное" is pretty routine, as is "not entirely successful".

HarryWharton&Co, when people say "не совсем удачное фото", it does not mean, that there is something wrong with the picture. It can be really excellent by all means and very successful, but still "не совсем удачное". Let's say you took my picture and everything on it is really good. But I do not like the way I look. I think I look too fat or too old, and I call it "не совсем удачное фото". That is my personal opinion, and it does not make the picture unsuccessful. Indeed, all others might think, that I look great, and the picture is a piece of art.
See what I mean?
I would translate the phrase as "Not satisfying photo". I understand, it is not the best description, but at least it reflects the meaning of the phrase.

///Even worse ///
Why? You call the photo "неудачное" when you do not like something about it. You are not satisfied. But it does not mean, there is something wrong with it.

 x-z

link 31.07.2011 13:00
Right. For this reason you say 'not a very good one'. Satisfaying is very not a good one. And I mean your attempt.

 AMOR 69

link 31.07.2011 13:16
But "not a very good one" does not reflect is it of poor quality (unsuccessful) or just simply you do not like it.

Thank you, yes, I see what you mean. But

" it does not mean, that there is something wrong with the picture. It can be really excellent by all means and very successful.... Let's say you took my picture and everything on it is really good. But I do not like the way I look. I think I look too fat or too old, and I call it "не совсем удачное фото". That is my personal opinion, and it does not make the picture unsuccessful. Indeed, all others might think, that I look great, and the picture is a piece of art."

Right, but once again the boring truth is that you can use "not entirely successful" in exactly the context you give above. Why nobody, save the extremely wise and insightful x-z, wants to accept this fact beats me.

I'm afraid "not satisfying photo" just isn't good English.
