For the record, "usurping powers" is generally confined to the political spectrum; so too is "seizing powers", although this can be used figuratively

You have a good point.

However, particularly in light of the previous clause, "assuming" here is okay, I believe. We already know we're talking about exceeding one's authority, so "assume" naturally takes on a negative hue.
