Port of Ghent is a medium-sized port in Belgium located along the Ghent-Terneuzen canal that is linked to the river Scheldt. Nautical access is limited to Panamax-size vessels and it has a strong focus on the hinterland markets in Belgium, France and Central Europe. It is located in the middle of bigger ports such as Rotterdam and Antwerp. In its direct vicinity, the ports of Zeebrugge and Flushing are also competing for their place in the market. All ports are within a sailing distance of less than 6 hours from one another with Rotterdam a little farther, placing Ghent in a very competitive environment.

Port of Ghent now was hit hard by the crisis in 2009, however it came out stronger than the neighbouring ports. 2010 was an absolute record year, during which more than 48 million tonnes of cargo were handled, which was an increase by 29% compared with 2009. Ghent recorded the largest growth in the Hamburg–Le Havre range.

Given all the above information, the question can be asked: what brought Ghent in a position to realize that growth in such a challenging market? Why did customers decide to call at Ghent instead of at other larger ports? Or in the words that we use for our clients, why don’t you come to Ghent?

The answer can be found in the following reasons:
• Ghent is large enough the cope with the bigger vessels and operators and small enough to really care for its clients.
• Ghent has a strong vision for the future focusing on added value activities.
• Ghent has a diversified portfolio of commodities handled in the port.
• Ghent is working hard on improving its accessibility.
• Ghent has 600 hectares of greenfield land available for expansion.

It is this entire package that makes Ghent a strong proposal for potential and current customers.

The port of Ghent possesses a considerable amount of infrastructure. Its total quay length is 27 kilometres and it has an overall area of approximately 4,600 hectares. The port is accessible through the Terneuzen locks that are capable of handling vessels up to 265 metres in length, a beam of 37 metres and 12.5 metres of draught. In case vessels are brought in that are deeper than the 12.5 metres allowed, they can be lightered outside the locks after which this cargo comes in on barges. Just for comparison: 27 million tonnes out of the 48 million tonnes of total volume came to or went out of Ghent in ocean-going vessels; the remainder in barges.
The port is an autonomous municipal company. About 165 people work at Ghent Port Company, allowing for a flexible and dedicated workforce. The added value a smaller organization can offer its clients is a smaller distance not only to its management and directors but also to relevant government entities. In this way, Ghent can work closely with its clients to make sure that the best circumstances are created to allow its client to perform his business. This way of working has been embedded in the organization for several decades and has become part of the port's culture. As a client of port of Ghent, you can be certain that everything reasonably possible will be done to ensure an excellent service. This is already highly appreciated by our current clients.

спасибо, nephew. Хотелось бы как то покороче для названия. Может есть эквивалент в русском для этого выражения, что-то вроде "маленький, да удаленький".

спросите у кого угодно, если мне не верите: название любого куска (раздела, главы, документа, романа, ...) переводится только когда содержимое этого куска уже переведено. ну или по крайней мере - прочитано и осмыслено.
это не то чтобы правило, но это норма ;) так оно типа лучше работает ;)
