Subject: OFF: some thoughts about our future.. Ladies and gentlemen,As most of you probably know, the forum member by the name Kirsha has gone to some lengths recently sharing with us her vision of a forum where the “skill, toil and devotion” of the resident community of competent members will receive its due rewards and no recognition will be denied to those who are worthy of it – a better, fairer MT, in other words. The response so far has been less than enthusiastic, and decidedly so. However, on second thought, if you take the posturing and attention-seeking away, what she has been trying to say will boil down to this: at present, MT is essentially a marketplace for free advice, which in the grand scheme of things means that all of that “skill, toil and devotion” indeed goes unrewarded (unless you can count the fun of it and recognition that you get from your peers as a reward) and the worst part of it is that rewards instead go to the wretched of the translation world who come here asking for help. They are the ones who do get paid (and in cash, not thank-you posts) – to them, it’s like attending free class and getting paid for doing so – there is an element of gross injustice in this, wouldn’t you think? So, ladies and gentlemen, until now Kirsha indeed has a point, but her proposed solution would simply replace one freeriding model with another, albeit more formalised. Question: why bother? Would it make an iota of real difference? I don’t think so. But what if a way could be found to come up with a forum design that will allow rewarding winning answers with what really matters, cash, how much more interesting would things get if this were possible? I say, a lot. And, in 2011, that’s not outside the realm of possibility, not even in this country. This is how I see it: each forum member will have an account with a cash balance, which he or she will be able to refill as necessary by various means (a practice already in existence at many websites). When posting a question, the member will be prompted by the system to name his or her price for the winning answer, anything from zero dollars and up. Say, if somebody struggles with a tricky problem that we all know is simply beyond his (or her) powers and wants one of the forum’s abler members to rescue him (or her), then won’t you think that parting with a dollar or two to have himself (or herself) rescued this way is only fair? And, even if it’s just a dollar, it’s still better than nothing. Now, of course, depending on the complexity of problem and other relevant factors that price could be higher – 5, 10 dollars and so on, but the idea here is that naming any such price will always be up to the asker, while other members, in their turn, will always be free to decide whether the effort is worth the named price. Next, answers will be provided (pretty much the same way they are now) and, upon determining the winner, the named price will be deducted from the asker’s account and credited to the account of the member who supplies the winning answer. How to determine the winner is, obviously, the big question, and one way of doing this could be by a moderator decision, majority vote or another procedure, following which the blocked amount of the named price will be automatically deducted from the asker’s account in favour of the winner. However, I would let the asker not only choose the winner but also make him (or her) responsible for transferring the price to the winner’s account. Failure to make a prompt payment will be immediately recorded in the asker’s payment history, which will be viewable by any forum member, so no cheat will be able to abuse the system for very long. At any given point in time, any forum member will be able to withdraw his (or her) positive balance using links to existing web payment systems such as, for example, Paypal. Hell, I can see myself scoring enough cash to buy a case of my favourite lager in a few spare minutes of my day.. MT will be making its money by applying a reasonable percentage to each payment made by an asker. A royalty to me as the guy who dreamed it all up will be nice, too. Once it’s up and running, the effects of the new site on the member community will be profound: productive contributors will no longer have to expend their “skill, toil and devotion” and receive nothing but thanks and stupid comments in return, lazy bastards will finally start looking their shit up in MT the dictionary or googling it before coming to the forum and begging that it be brought to them on a plate, Alisa2’s will be a thing of the past.. I can also see that it has a potential to revolutionise the entire industry: proz and other competitors (if such exist) will go the way of dinosaurs (since everybody who is anybody will be here out to make a buck and have fun in the process), and, hopefully, the new site will eventually evolve into an online megamarket bringing together genuine pros and original clients (who will come and list more, bigger orders, which, of course, means more money) and taking out of the game the parasites of the industry, i.e., translation bureaus and incompetent hacks. In other words, the translation world will never be the same again. Now, your thoughts, please.. |

Oscar Milde, было приятно почитать. Идея хорошая, тогда можно было бы и как некоторые аскеры по нескольку абзацев без зазрения совести постить, но насколько реализуема? Хотя когда-то люди и полеты в космос считали невозможными. Датой навеяло. |

Franky, не принимайте блиско с серцу... Фих с ими, с халявщиками. Игнорируйте их. Или стебитесь. Oscar, вы ошиблись трибуной. Это не форум профессиональных переводчиков. Это не форум переводчиков вообще (он и не задумывался как таковой). Это форум пользователей словарей МТ. (Почувствуйте разницу). Только и всего. И таким он, имхо, и останется. Для профи - ProZ, где они могу блеснуть своей квалификацией, заработать реноме и стяжать клиентов. Для них же - ГП, где можно вести умственные беседы за профессию... Мне там скучно. А это - курилка тех, кто просто по жизни сталкивается с иноязыком. Здесь НЕ ВСЕ переводчики. Я, например. Такой курилкой этот форум и останется. Монетизировать ее посещение... Технически очень проблематично. Надо полностью перестраивать сайт. (Кто, по-вашему, будет этим заниматься?) Даже если это и произойдет (which I disallow), это будет (if at all) другой сайт. Платный ПроЗ? Что на нем будет, кто на нем будет - мне даже представить трудно. По той простой причине, что перестройки не будет. Ну некому его перестраивать. Sjoe! ... Вы не поняли!!!... Все учтено могучим ураганом ... мультитрановцы денег платить не будут. Они будут их по-лу-чать! Это же все чрезвычайно просто... Ведь сам форум и образовательные семинары с участием таких выдающихся переводчиков современности, как Sjoe! ... Туманов ... Сан-Саныч и Бейбарыс ... будут посещать любители английского языка всего мира. Сотни тысяч людей, богато обеспеченных людей, будут стремиться в Мультитран. Во-первых, обычный Интернет такого количества посетителей выдержать не сможет. Следовательно, Моссовет построит широкополосную магистраль Интырнет-2. Это — раз. Два — это гостиницы и небоскребы для размещения посетителей семинаров. Три — это поднятие сельского хозяйства в радиусе на тысячу километров: гостей нужно снабжать — овощи, фрукты, икра, шоколадные конфекты. Дворец, в котором будет проходить презентация обновленного Мультитрана, — четыре. Пять — постройка гаражей для гостевого автотранспорта. Для передачи всему миру сенсационных результатов мозговых атак участников платного форума придется построить сверхмощную спутниковую телестанцию. Это — в-шестых. Теперь относительно Интернет-2. Несомненно, таковой не будет обладать такой пропускной способностью, чтобы Мультитран могли посещать все желающие. Отсюда вытекает Интернет следующего поколения — регулярная широкополосная связь для отправки сообщений в режиме реального времени во все концы света, включая Лос-Анжелос и Мельбурн.
