Нужен контекст, что было до этого, и что у мацумото за атитюд

возможно его охватило чувство глубокой благодарности

или например в борьбе эмоций взяло верх чувство благодарности

хотя без контекста это просто мои фантазии

Суть в том, что Матсумото - заключённый. А главный герой выступает а роли его перевозчика. И вот на пути они остановились в отеле и у Матсумото случился словесный понос. Главного героя это настораживает, вот он и был несколько поражён таким отношением Матсумото, а потом эта несчастная фраза.

“Thanks,” Takanori muttered. “Most cops wouldn’t do that.” He leaned against the wall, staring at the far side of the room.
Yuu grabbed the orange suit and walked into the bathroom, hanging it over the shower bar. He was somewhat thrown by Matsumoto’s attitude, and the gratefulness had taken the cake.

да всеравно нифига не понятно, хто такие Takanori и Yuu и где тут Мацумото и кто из них коп и что он такого сделал?

Thanks,” и “Most cops wouldn’t do that" наводят на мысль, что коп что-то сделал хорошее, и в ответ кого-то прям обуяла благодарность. А если Мацумото зэк - тада незнаю. В общем главное понять, кто кому и за что благодарен... Ответ - на предыдущих страницах рассказа

Хотя может я вообще не в ту степь...

Таканори Матсумото - заключённый.
Юу(он же Аой) - коп.

“Hey, do you think you could take my jumpsuit off? It’s soaked from the rain. I’m freezing.”
Yuu rolled his eyes at the mirror. The file had said this guy was quiet. Apparently it lied.
“Seriously, Aoi. I’ve got clothes on underneath it,” Takanori insisted. “I’m a small guy. I catch ill easily. Is it too much trouble to take this thing off and let it dry?”
Yuu glanced over at him. Sighing, he walked over to the other man and knelt down in front of him. Taking the handcuff keys, he undid one of the wrists. Takanori rubbed the freed wrist before moving to unzip his suit, sliding his arms out of it to reveal a whit wife-beater and what looked like a loose pair of sweatpants underneath. He pushed the rest of the jumpsuit off and set it aside before putting his hands back next to the pipe and waiting for Yuu to reattach the cuffs.
Yuu watched all of this in fascination. He had never seen such a cooperative prisoner before. He was beginning to wonder if this guy was for real. His behavior only served to raise Yuu’s suspicion more, and as he locked the handcuffs back around the blonde’s wrist, he couldn’t help but wonder if this was all some kind of sick joke or ruse.
“Thanks,” Takanori muttered. “Most cops wouldn’t do that.” He leaned against the wall, staring at the far side of the room.

вот первые предыдущие "капли": ... He [=Yuu] had never seen such a cooperative prisoner before. He was beginning to wonder if this guy [=Matsumoto] was for real. ...
и далее "последняя капля": “Thanks,” Takanori [=Matsumoto] muttered.... He [=Yuu] was somewhat thrown by Matsumoto’s attitude, and the gratefulness [="thanks"] had taken the cake.
