Net/Co indicates the value of optical density according to the “standard point” principle (mean ± SD); CFU, bacterial colony-forming units.

The principle of “standard points”11 was then applied to adsorbence units obtained at spectrophotometric reading of stool samples of all patients. In detail, each stool sample was examined in duplicate, and its average reading (Av) was evaluated as follows:
Av = (first optical density + second optical density)/2. The same procedure was used for a pool of three control patients who tested negative, and the average reading obtained from all was expressed as a control value (Co). Successively, for each sample, Co was subtracted from Av to obtain the net optical density (Net) as follows: Net − Av = Co. Finally, H. pylori stool antigen positivity was expressed by a numerical value reflecting the Net/Co ratio.
