Aleksey Balabanov wrote the role of Captain Zhurov for Yevgeni Mironov but the latter refused to star in "Gruz 200", like Sergey Makovetskiy and Kirill Pirogov, who also collaborated with Balabanov for his previous films. After reading the script, Makovetskiy even recommended that Balabanov should not make "Gruz 200" at all. The role of Captain Zhurov went to Aleksei Poluyan, although Balabanov originally planned only a role in an episode for him. Poluyan was seriously ill at the time. According to Poluyan, the crew "took great care of him, wouldn't allow him anything, wouldn't let him go anywhere, like a bird in a golden cage." At first they even wanted to make the motorcycle scene in CGI out of fear that Poluyan wouldn't stand it but changed their minds. Poluyan had no previous experience of driving whatsoever but they taught him in two hours and the motorcycle that would fume and burn every now and then caused much more trouble than Poluyan. The latter died in 2010.
