Часто говорят, что на нашей планете происходит глобальное потепление, хотя никто пока не представляет, чем все это может кончиться. Таяние ледников, парниковые эффекты, нарушение озонового слоя атмосферы, не грозит ли все это тем, что на месте Петербурга образуется какая-нибудь курортная зона с пальмам, кокосами и субтропическим климатом, а где-нибудь в районе Воронежа раскинется настоящая пустыня, как Сахара.

My two cents:
Global warming has been a much abused subject these days though no one can say for sure what it is going to turn into in the end. Just imagine: tropics instead of St. Petersburg and a dry desert right in the middle of Central Russia; these might well be the ramifications of the glacial melting, the greenhouse effect and ozone layer depletion.
