Выражение встречается в следующем контексте:

"he started as he said, 'devil in drugs.'"- 'это, если я не ошибаюсь, про "одного известного политического деятеля:). У вас этот фрагмент пропущен, но далее он признается, что пил пиво, курил марихуану и даже пробовал кокаин. Так что все переводится буквально.

странная фразеология. кто автор этой биографии? гугл дает лишь один хит на эту "цитату", а именно - текст этой самой "биографии"))

возможно, имелось в виду "[to] devil in drugs"? т.е. что-то вроде "стал баловаться наркотиками"?

Речь действительно идет о Бараке Обаме. Похоже, что здесь должно быть dabble, а не devil. "Баловаться наркотиками" - то, что нужно. Спасибо огромнейшее!

All sound kinda similar. Native speakers, unlike us, can afford the luxury of playing with words. Рискну предположить, что если бы слово devil стало
глаголом, то означало бы что-то типа 'seriously do smth (in negative context)'. Поэтому я предпочел delve, т.к. это тоже "делать серьезно".
Of course, all this is pure speculation:))

i cannot be sure it is "dabble", but i do believe that is so:

1. i do not think that "playing with words" took place in this case. it's just the transcript in question (link given above, 17.11.2010 14:02) did not capture correctly what was said on tape. to be fair, it is not easy to decipher what is being said; you can try to listen to it: http://www.hulu.com/watch/80703/biography-barack-obama (our fragment starts around 9:00 of this movie.) .... is it "dabble" or "devil"? hard to say.

2. in any case, i do not think his drug use could count as "serious" (... he started, as he said "[dabble/devil/?] in drugs." Obama drank beer, smoke marijuana, and even tried cocaine. ... In high school, he was not a model student, but his grades were still good enough to get a scholarship to Occidental College) .... i think that's along the lines of what they would call "dabble with drugs".
