может быть, картинки в гугле показывают что-то похожее на провода идущие к свечам зажигания в двигатель.
Но всё таки действие разворачивается в 50-х, может это что то с лошадьми и скачками связано?

ну вобщем, наверно, образно перевести типа "рычаги" или "вожжи" или "ниточки" как на марионетках.
