Добрый день!

У меня возникло несколько вопросов по пунктуации из психологического текста:

1) Ask "How does it work?"

Нужно ли посли "ask" поставить запятую или двоеточие?

2)The participants should be able to understand:
• that the child’s development is strongly influenced by (social) context
• that inherited characteristics as well as social influences are responsible for children’s traits
• the difference between innate and acquired

Нужно ли после каждой (•) поставить ";", а в конце точку?
Это идет в начале главы, как основые пункты, которые будут объяснены.

К сожалению, у меня еще один вопрос, но уже касательно артиклей, "the child's development", ребенок тут употребляется впервые, не будет ли более правильно написать "a". Хотя у психологов почему-то они всегда the child and the facilitator.

Я бы написала "а" или вообще ничего

1) После ask я бы поставила запятую.
2) После (•) я бы не ставила кавычки, в конце каждого пункта поставила бы точку с запятой, а в конце последнего - точку.
Что касается артикля, то я бы остановилась на the - человек, проходящий тест, вероятно, знает, о развитии какого ребенка идет речь.

Also, there is no colon (:) after "The participants should be able to understand".

If you want a colon, then revise as follows: "The participants should be able to understand the following:".

This is because colon is allowed only after a complete sentence.

Not necessarily, and not always. A list can be introduced by a fragment, not a complete sentence. In that case the introduction is treated as part of a sentence that each of the list items completes. So in this example, we have three distinct sentences formatted as a list, as follows.

ValyaAnt, one flaw of the list the way you have it is that the third item is not parallel in structure to the first two. You should think of rewiring it.

The participants should be able to:
• Understand the strong influence of (social) context on child development process. (sentence 1, bullet starts with a capital letter, ends with a period - начинается с прописной, заканчивается точкой)
• Assess the influence of inherited characteristics, as well as social factors on child character traits. (sentence 2)
• Differentiate between innate and acquired. (sentence 3)

I'd say this is the most common way to format bulletted lists (at least in technical documentation). Of course, there may be style-related exceptions.
