vogule, here's a free piece of advice: professional courtesy is an important component of conducting a survey.

Ask yourself a question: Why would people want to participate in my survey? I'm not giving them incentives of any kind. They don't even know me. Would they want to spend time on some student's homework?

You should have first introduced yourself, briefly described the purpose of your research, and stated the expected outcomes of the survey. It would be a good idea to give some details about the scope of the questionnaire (how many questions, what type of questions, what's the expected time commitment). At least give people that much. Give them some reasons to help you.
