Tapering-back of structures, and separating walls

If owing to the circumstances of the terrain or for economic reasons it is not possible to secure an entire natural terrain unit, the unprotected flank should be heavily tapered back in the downward direction. This is to ensure that the lower structures are not damaged by avalanches descending immediately adjacent to the defense structure. To hinder adjacent snow slab avalanches from spreading into the defense zone, additional structures may be placed at the edge of the zone. These should be positioned in the gap between the normal structures (distance L) and have a total length of at least 2 DK Separation walls arranged in the line of slope at the side of the structure should have a vertical height of approx. HK/2 to prevent full-depth avalanches spreading to the structure. They substantially reduce the end-effect loads as shown in Section 45. Also, to prevent damage to the supports, the separation walls should be extended down to the downslope foundations (Fig. 6).
