Good morning!Doing a bit of research for my colleagues.. and proving a point. How would you translate: Thanks for your help in the battle! |

It well might be that... |
Lots of ways to skin this cat, as I'm sure you know... Context rules :) |
LK+1 We don't rule out a possibility |
SirReal That is the point I am trying to make to the co-workers who think that the best translation of this is "We do not exclude that..." |
For all we know, ... blah-blah... could/may/might There's a good chance that... In all likelihood, ... It cannot be ruled out that... There exists a certain possibility... |
In all likelihood ≈ Мы не исключаем, что :) The rest is good stuff. |
It is quite possible that ... |
е. blah-blah... could/may/might...
%&$ easy, who died & made u god? |
Oh, no. NO. No, no, no. The way you start a sentence is just as important as what's in it. |
2 Susan You haven't provided any context... We're arguing about nothing specific, which is a waste of time. |
SirReal If you want something specific: But in good English. |
Option: A sharp drop in oil prices might well be the case/expected/follow |
We do not exclude that, |
A sharp decline in oil prices is quite possible/not entirely out of the question[, experts said]. |
|

we don't think it's [totally] unlikely that... |
...might be a likely scenario, experts argue According to experts.. |
My point has been made. The imput of other Russians is really going to kill them..... |
It's a weasel word, really!

I don't use search engines to determine whether something is good or bad English, but it works as evidence to show to people like you. |
2 Igor Good, but 'precluded' doesn't work, sorry. |
|

Sorry, it does. I thousands of cases, in English-language Western publications. |
|

I'd say, that's the most common way of putting that idea through. |
I don't use search engines to determine whether something is good or bad English, but it works as evidence to show to people like you. ... |

*****but it works as evidence to show to people like you*** Show what? That the expression is not common in geology papers? How can you show that through Google? My experiennce is not Google-based. |
2 gel I'm not wasting any more time proving anything to you. If you don't want to use "sharp decline," I'm not going to stop you. Just don't go crying 'russism' every time you see something you're not familiar with - at least not to me. 2 Igor |
2 Igor Sorry for any confusion - my post from 11:25 was meant for gel, not you. |
Just don't go crying 'russism' every time you see something you're not familiar with - at least not to me. Why not? Truth is spout in discussion. And u r throwing in the towel so fast it is not even interesting... |

****but means "it cannot be stopped"**** Are you telling me I've been reading geology literature for 30 years and all that time I misinterpreted that expression?)))))))) I know perfectly well it is "not recommended", but it is there all the same. |

we do not discard the possibility |

Wi all due respect, "usage" is not ruled by dictionaries, it is ruled by practice. However ill. |
Igor, I'm not sure what your interpretation is (in your specific field), but there is a not-so-fine difference in meaning which I hope you are aware of. Fluctuations in oil prices are not something that experts have any control over. All they can do is make forecasts. Here, исключить refers only to the possibility/likelihood of an event happening in the future. To preclude something, on the other hand, means to prevent it from happening. That's why it doesn't fit. In other situations, "it cannot be precluded" may be translated into Russian as "нельзя исключить, что," but it is a mistranslation in Susan's case (as I'm sure she's aware). |

exclude is OK. So says Longman Dictionary. exclude -- 4. to decide that something is not a possibility + sharp decline is OK. gel, http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q="sharp+decline"++site:news.bbc.co.uk&aq=&oq=&aqi=&fp=1mZ_-PL2Zjc |

SirReal, I know all this. My point is, the word AS IT IS USED (not only in my specific fied, but , as in 8.06.2009 11:48, also in medicine, and who knows where else), also means "rule out", no matter what dictionaries are trying to impose. |
now we got another fan of those "hits" in google...))) |
|
link 8.06.2009 9:11 |
gel, For goodness' sake, I knew that word in that meaning decadeds before Google. |
Exclude can be used, but not if you want to say "it is not excludable that a...." they use it this way. my point is to prove to them that this is not actually English but Russlisch. Preclude here would not make a whole lot of sense. Igor |

Наберите: "sharp decline" site:news.bbc.co.uk Susan79, |
|
link 8.06.2009 9:30 |
sk the point is that they use this everywhere and we are having trouble making the point to them that it is incorrect. i think a link to this vetka alone will help them out a lot. |

а скопипейстить "sharp decline" site:news.bbc.co.uk не судьба? |
2 gel You're very welcome to keep thinking inside the box :) |
SirReal keep flying in the outer space.
Slava Becasue like any language, English does respect itself and you can't just do whatever you like with it, even if it happens to be the most flexible language on the planet. :) |
over and out see no point in further bla-blahing |
We cannot rule out the possibility of the oil price slump. |

Susan, ***Not unpublished - just wrong from a usage point of view.*** OK, I know they are wrong, dictionarywise, - but they are there, written by native English speakers (non-native speakers are more law abiding, as a rule))) |
Igor Since when does "written by native speakers" mean it is OK? Even we use and NEED Editors. |
noooooowww we r talking ))))) |

We think the possibility of a sharp fall in oil prices cannot be excluded. |
|
link 8.06.2009 11:18 |
Susan, I would not keep sticking with that expression if it were not used so commonly - like I said, it is virually the most common expression used to mean "rule out the possibility", in peer-reviewed learned journals of high standing.... Who am I, or any editor, to correct them? I am sure these journals employ first-class editors. |
