Such abstraction is always dubious; it is especially so in the case of a conference which has as its main topic “the effects of violence upon women in South Asia.”
The title of the paper was “Overcoming the Silent Archive in Bangladesh: Women Bear Witness to the Violence in the 1971 Liberation War.”

In her paper, she reported on horrendous acts of violence, including rape and mutilation, committed against women in 1971 by militants from both (or all) sides of the conflict—crimes which subsequently, however, were repressed or silenced in the interest of national unity and security. In order to overcome this repression or what she calls the “silent archive” of violence, Yasmin had interviewed or interrogated a large number of women who had been victimized in 1971. Many of the women she approached were in fact willing to cooperate and thus, at long last, to “bear witness to the violence” they had suffered. The paper was replete with detailed stories of acts of violence against women: killings, rapes, humiliations.

As in so many other instances, women—here Muslim women—were the victims of the most outrageous acts of abuse: they were “raped, burnt, rendered homeless, and yet coerced into not registering complaints with the police.” Thus, just as in the 1971 war in Bangladesh, violence committed against women was turned into a “silent archive”.
