askandy, what about interpellation? interpellation means a demand on the part of an MP that the government official explain a certain policy/action. that is, summed up in coulpe of words, the right of MPs to question cabinet officials.

Я поэтому и спросил, потому что набирал и обнаружил deputies'inquiry больше чем deputies'enquiry. Но буду придерживаться enquiry - хотя в британском Нете inquiry встречается тоже часто.

askandy, i m not sure how it works in russia, but an america a congressman first sends out an RFI (request for information). if he gets bupkes, then he can subpoena the information, and failure co comply with that is a punishable offense. maybe there r parallels with the russian system that u might find useful in finding good english equivalents to russian terms.

thank you for the extensive explanation. I'd rather call it a generic name like 'enquiry' and if there is a need i will elaborate on it verbally (thanks be to God it's a working routine). The foreigners working in our country have to understand that there are always some things that require not only a translation but also should be explained...
