cut by cut

Добрый день!
меня тут коллега озадачил таким вопросом:

как перевести следующее:
cut by cut,
Slice by Slice,
life by life,
и.т.д. в этом ключе.

Я, кроме выражения step by step, о других выражениях и не слышала.
Может быть существует общий принцип перевода данных выражений?

1, 2 - постепенно

ну так же, как и шаг за шагом :)
by переводить как "за"

т.е. все такие выражения имеют смысл "постепенно"?
