beat down has the connotation that you will be actually beating him.

I talked him down. BUT if the original text is not politically correct, you can say Jewed him down. It sounds awful, but you need to look at the tone, etc. of the original.
Though in most cases, Jew smone down will NOT fit and should be avoided.

we also have the verb "haggle". You could say that "I haggled (with him) and got the price down to xxx."

English speaking will understand but they will still have a picute of you "beating him down" in their heads. Trust me, I am an English speaker. Beat down is a STRONG term with strong associations.

Rusty? Nah. I just think about the connotations and association involved in saying things like "beat down". It is an incredibly strong term and not going to be appropriate for all instances of knocking the price of something down.
