To fill the cells, start with the extraction circuit. Put sufficient aqueous into each settler to flood the aqueous outlet from the settler. This will prevent organic from filling the aqueous lines. Use synthetic raffinate in each stage, or use feed if no raffinate is available. Until the mixer in each stage is full and starts to overflow to the settler, turn the mixer speed down so that the mixer is agitating but not pumping effectively. Once overflow has commenced, the mixer speed should be adjusted to the target operating values.
Start the aqueous flow into the last extraction stage (where loaded organic leaves). Direct the organic feed to this stage. If a heater is placed in the mixer, it can only be turned on when the mixer box is full and being agitated. As soon as the settler is full, move the organic feed line up the circuit. The aqueous feed remains where it was. Make sure that the level is adjusted in the settler of the stage that was just filled in such a way that no organic is advancing, only aqueous. Continue to do this until all extraction stages are operating. Then start adjusting the settler levels so that both phases are overflowing as required.
