Subject: OFF: Translation and editing daily norms
I know that this has been asked numerous times, but I want to check on what the daily norms for both translating and editing are.

Translations 6 - 8 or 8 - 10? I can't remember.

And what is the norm for editing - the same or higher? I feel like it should be higher than for translating.

Thanks!

TRANSLATION: appr. 1page (1800 characters)/hour
EDITING: no idea

anyone know about the editing side of it?

at least 3 pages per hour.
Disclaimer: It is our company's standard

Oftentimes it depends on the company, Susan.

And if I am to come up with my own norm and report that to management, what is the standard?

The company currently has no norm as far as I can tell.

Susan, then you are lucky, enjoy it :) Don't spoil them, tell then it's 1 page per hour, and they will expect that from you :))

If you need to back it up - all major international organisations, UN, EU, governments etc - usually have a page about translating services, and its generally 1 page (250-300 words) per hour.

P.S. - editing - possibly 2-3 pages per hour, but it really depends. Usually "until the document is perfect" :)) Sometimes I can edit 15 pages in an hour, because the text is well translated and good, sometimes I can do 1/2 page in an hour, because it's complex and a major re-write.

At least the rates should not be worse than those for typists...

-- I agree with you, but I need to tell them the norm by which I will be planning my work load. 2 - 3 pages seems reasonable as a norm. But we all know that more can be done, or less depending on the quality of the original.

-- That would just be plain ol' unfair and dishonest. :)

- can you monitor yourself for a week, see how fast you can edit on average?

It's not actually :) 1. one nominal page per hour is an expected standard in many countries, so you are not fibbing. and 2. if you can *regularly* translate 2, 3 or whatever pages per hour then by all means tell them that! But then if you have a bad day, and you can only work at half your capacity, or your computer broke, or you had to reinstall your dictionaries - then you will have some leeway. Think of it as you insurance for the bad days :)

Pooh bear

I misread and thought you were talking about editing. One page an hour for translations I completely agree with.
