Как лучше перевести эту часть?
Вариант:
If the object was inserted by an external reference, after applying the command {65766}Edit Source {65767} it will open as an application corresponding in Windows to a file type which this bitmap object has.

Если объект был вставлен внешней ссылкой - это как? Внешняя ссылка материализовалась и вставила объект? Или объект представлен в качестве внешней ссылки.

приложение, сопоставленное типу файла: application mapped to the file type

Да, ну и корявый же у Вас исходник!

If the object was inserted using an external reference (or simply If you inserted an xref'ed object), when you perform/select the Edit Source command, the source object opens in the application associated with the object's file type.
(Windows здесь, по-моему, вообще не к месту - можно смело опустить).

Editing an Embedded Graphic

When you have embedded a graphic, you can edit whenever you need.

To Edit an Embedded Graphic:

1. Open the File object containing the embedded graphic. Either locate the File object or open the topic containing the graphic, then:
* Double-click the File object or graphic

-or-
* Right-click on the File object or graphic and choose Open.
2. Switch to any of the output format tabs (Print, Help, or Web). The graphic is displayed in the File object's Preview pane on the right of the window.
3. Right-click on the graphic and choose Open. The image editing program used by your computer to open graphics of that format is started, and the graphic is opened, ready for editing.
4. Make your changes, Picasso, then save them.
5. Choose OK to save your changes to the File object.

Насколько я помню учебники по этому делу, есть два способа вставить объект в файл, или to link или to embed.
