The English idiom here is one I learned in Oklahoma, and I don't think it's common today, so I apologize for being obscure. It means "a surprise so shocking that a person would be stunned for a year." The image you'd want to have in your mind is of a child or a plant that doesn't grow for a year after something bad happens.
In the case of this movie, it seemed like Halle Berry was putting up a bit too much of a struggle against her feelings. In Shakespeare's play Hamlet, Queen Gertrude puts it another way: "The lady doth [does] protest too much."
Another way this idea is expressed in English is "I am shocked, shocked...." with the second "shocked" written in Italics; it refers to a scene in the famous movie Casablanca, when a corrupt French police officer pretends to be surprised at the discovery of illegal gambling. I could have written that Halle Berry was shocked, shocked to discover that Benicio del Toro has any romantic interest in her.
