Operators use many kinds of rigs to drill development wells. A common type in U.S. waters is the platform rig, which may be rigid or compliant. A rigid platform does not move with the motion of the wind and sea; a compliant platform does move.

Platform rigs may be built of steel or concrete and may be either rigid or compliant. Rigid platform rig, which rest on the seafloor, are the caisson-type platform, the concrete gravity platform, and the steel-jacket platform.
