Посоветуйте, пож-та, как здесь лучше перевести NEITHER:

Может быть, "Ни Г., ни Р. не стремились иметь множество учеников..."?

имхо, там опечатка: Gainsborough NEITHER had NOR desired pupils

т.е. У гейнсборо не было учеников, и он не хотел, чтобы они были...

имхо там опечатка. Думаю, что должно быть Gainsborough neither had NOR desired pupils - У Гейнсборо не было учеников, до он и не хотел их иметь (если переписать, получается neither had pupils nore desired to have them)
