Еще в школе нам вдалбливали, что нужно говорить "picture" с предлогом in.
Тем не менее, я часто встречала словосочетание on the picture.
а также
on the graph - in the graph
on the chart - in the chart

Так как же все-таки правильно? In или On?

Оба правильны, но примерно в пять раз чаще (судя по Гуглу) встречается IN

не думайте, что их уровень advance, in the picture, а on зависит от контекста the data submitted depend on the chart, refer to the info represented in the chart.

moreover, простите, но Ваш пример не совсем удачный, потому что on относится к слову depend
я имею в виду какое-то изображение, которое имеется на картине/графике/схеме и т.д.
вот в этом случае лучше in или on?

Лучше использовать активный залог и писать: The fig./graph./pic. shows/displays/illustrates the .....

Может, это и так всем понятно - тогда извините. Если нет - тогда это совет. Я в том же Гугле всегда смотрю, кто авторы ссылки. Пример из другой области: в английских текстах славяне часто пишут dysadaptation, французы иногда - disadaptation, а носители языка всегда - maladaptation (естественно, имяя в виду одно и то же).

к сожалению, активную конструкцию везде в моем переводе использовать не получится, потому что весь текст повествует о линиях, рисунках и т.д., которые на графике... и с ними производятся всякие манипуляции
поэтому все время писать The graph shows lines/objects/bars/circles which are... как-то некрасиво будет
а в гугле я уже смотрела (ессно, не на русских сайтах), но с ответом так и не определилась

у них как никак есть нумерация ref. Picture 1, ref. Graph 2, ref. Schedule 3.

The three photos below demonstrate the difference between 1 Point, 2 Point, and 3 Point Perspective. Fig. 1 is an example of 1 Point perspective. All of the major Vanishing Points for the buildings in the foreground of Fig. 1 converge at one central location on the horizon line. The angle of view or Point Of View (POV) in Fig. 1 is referred to as Normal View perspective. In Fig. 2 the vanishing points for the two opposing faces of the center foreground building project towards two different vanishing points on the horizon line. In Fig. 3 we see that the horizontal building elements project to the left and right horizon and the vertical building elements project to a central vanishing point in the sky. This upper vanishing point is called the Zenith. If one were looking down on the object from a Bird's Eye perspective, the vanishing point below the horizon and would be called the Nadir.

In the next three diagrams, you will see the same three photographs with Vanishing Point trajectory lines (magenta) and Horizon Lines (blue) traced over the subject matter. Fig. 4 and Fig. 5 are both examples of Normal View perspective. A Normal View angle places the Horizon Line at a natural height as if the viewer was looking straight forward without tilting the head/camera up or down. In these two examples, you will notice that all of the vertical features of the buildings are straight up and down.

Fig. 6 is an example of a Worm's Eye perspective. In Fig. 6 the head/camera is tilted upward placing the Horizon below the picture. The perspective when the view is tilted in an upward direction, creates a third vanishing point at the Zenith. All of the vertical building features will converge at this upper vanishing point. If we were looking down on a subject, the viewing angle would be a Bird's Eye View and the vertical details would converge at the Nadir.

Зато теперь озадачилась предлогом перед словом "menu", потому что microsoft пишет везде on:
On the Chart menu, click Source Data, and then click the Data Range tab.
Selected Data Series or Selected Legend Key is only available on the Format menu when a data series or legend is selected.

мда, а я-то всю жизнь писала in menu: in the Main Menu, in the Context menu и т.д. (конечно, кроме меню, которое в ресторане: What's on the menu?)

ну это уже совсем другая история...
