In short, all of these words are somewhat similar in that they sometimes require an article and sometimes don't. The general rule of thumb is this: if you are talking about an institution or a concept, usually no article is needed: e.g.: I go to church every Sunday. Church was really inspiring today (meaning "church meetings were inspiring"). An attitude like that will land you in prison! But when you are talking about a particular school or prison as a geographic location, you would usually use an article. The school is just across the street from us. There is a new school being built on our street. The prison he did time at is known as one of the highest security prisons in the nation. Same thing applies to hospital. However, it seems like you hear people use an article with "hospital." Perhaps this is because talking about hospital, one usually talks about a particular one. While we are on the subject, there is an interesting trick to the word "table." When you say "There were three of us at table" (no article), what you mean is "There were three of us at dinner (meal)", not that there were three of you physically sitting at a table. This expression seems to be dying away at least in the U.S., but some older folks are still using it. (I think there is a short story by O. Henry, entitled "Three at Table.") |
