Непонятки со временем

Народ, помогите, пожалуйста. Никак не пойму, какое время использовать в следующем предложении "Я вчера чинил телевизор", то ли past simple (но действие то незавершенное), то ли past continuous (но оно тут как то не очень вписывается). Не пойму, как подчеркнуть несовершенный вид действия. И вообще будет ли считаться совершенным действие в предложении "I repaired the TV-set yesterday". Если нет, то ещё вопрос, как сказать "Я вчера починил телевизор"?

You could get away by saying 'i was busy repairing the tv yesterday",
я починил тв вчера will be i repaired the tv yesterday

but 'fixed' is better anyway. I fixed the tv.

It is hard to give advice without broader context. Sometimes, as part of a paragraph a sentence would make perfect grammatic sence, and no sence at all as a stand-alone utterance.

But in general, when you use past continuous, you should usually have something in your sentence to help pin-point the moment in time when the action was transpiring, or underscore the continuous nature of the action, e.g. "I was repairing my TV when John called," or "I was repairing my TV the whole day yesterday."

If you don't have that detail in your sentence, past continuous would sound a little clumsy. I would suggest saying something like "I tried repairing my TV yesterday." That way you are using simple past and, at the same time hinting that the action was not necessarily completed, only attempted.
