This additional hardfacing is used to prevent premature erosion of the spearpoint in center jet applications. This can be seen in Figure 2.16 where the picture on the left shows fluid erosion from the center jet has worn the spear point away and is wearing into cone steel. The picture on the right shows how the enhanced hardfacing on the spearpoint has protected the teeth from erosion.
