Наоборот, Рудут, я хочу защитить русский язык. Ведь если мы переведем это слова как sod or slacker они там подумают, что его (по русски) можно произносить где угодно. В МГУ, как известно, был случай, когда студенту из ГДР его советские однокурсники объяснили, что "за....сь" значит "очень хорошо". А потом, он спокойно употребил это слово в деканате в ответ на вопрос: Ну как Вам у нас живется? :-))

first, there are distinctions between brit/US english. Googler's examples are british. jerk and motherfucker have different connotations, and mu'fucka is something a rapper/black person would say, or someone from the south.

i may not understand the russian exactly, but if you say it's someone who's a slacker, then there's
loser/deadbeat
and you can always precede it with 'fucking' to make it stronger.

the reason i thought context would help is because there are so many other possibilities to insult/call someone a name in english that particular circumstances would dictate the most approporiate word.

for instance: fuckwit/dimwit/oaf/dick-for-brains/dickbrain/wanker
/imbecile/jackass/moron/douchebag/etc., etc., etc. (and again, "fuckin' " as defining adjective always makes it more intense).

2Mazz - I've never heard of 'fuckabout' although I have heard it used in this context: "hey, what are you doing?" "oh, just fucking about/around" (i.e., not doing much).

kreina, if raspizdyai in russian means a slacker who cannot be trusted to walk amd chew gum at the same time, then i think 'dickhead' would do nicely here. of course, it is a taboo word by dictionary standards, but on the plus side, it does reflect the expletive nature of the russian original. imho. hugs, talgat

to answer your question - my parents are russian. i grew up speaking it, albeit not very well. i then lived in russia, honing my skills, and did a degree in russian in england. now you know everything.
i've recently visited the russian dept at princeton and while they're not dropping their program, the largest number of graduate students in the russian dept at any one time never exceeded 12. even during the boom years of late 80's/early 90's.
