In 1985, a dairy in Des Moines, Iowa, placed the first “Have You Seen Me?” photos of missing children on the sides of their milk cartons. The photos in the campaign, those of Johnny Gosch and Juanita Rafela Estavez, were provided by Child Find, one of the oldest non-profit organizations dedicated to locating missing children. At one time, 600 dairies across the United States participated in the program, but it was eventually phased out. Child Find reported that although the campaign raised awareness about missing children, none were found as a result of the milk carton exposure. In the meantime, concerned parents complained that the photos and information were actually scaring their children while they tried to enjoy the first meal of the day at the breakfast table.
