learn this in his own time = izychit' eto samostoyatel'no; as we are looking at exam skills in lessons = tak kak my obrashaem vnimanie na sposobnost' sdachi ekzamena v nashih yrokah. (or something like this but that's the general meaning)

А посоветуйте как правильно перевести past papers. Это тоже школьная тематика. Может это контрольные какие-то?

I understand it as past due (prosrochennie pis'mennie zadaniya) - could be past due essays or any written assignments
