The 1st focus aims at the following scientific topic as defined in the relevant work programme of the NMP priority: 3.4.4 Integration of nanotechnologies, new materials, and new production technologies for more cost and eco-effective sector applications. The INCOMAT project objectives are targeted on the sector of medical biomaterials to foster breakthrough applications through the integration of multi-disciplinary research resources and expert teams of excellence in an industrial context. Advanced biomaterials are of strategic importance for medical technology in several areas. There is a tendency to group biomaterials into the hard tissue replacement area (in orthopaedic and dental materials) and the soft tissue replacement area (cardiovascular implants and general plastic-surgery materials). This project covers both groups, since the scientific subjects will concentrate on surface technologies and surface modifications meeting the research and technological requirements of both groups.

The 2nd focus is placed on the topic as defined in the NMP work programme: 3.4.5.3. Cooperation with Third countries in the field of nanotechnology, advanced multi-functional materials and new ways of production research.
Expanding the frontiers of knowledge requires substantial effort in terms of creativity, scientific and technical talent, availability of high quality infrastructures, financial resources and an understanding of possible implications. Valuable synergy can be achieved at international level only. For this purpose, appropriate contacts and partnerships are necessary to be established amongst European researchers and research teams from Third Countries.
