However, they were able to fight a largely independent war free of Kuomintang control and greatly expand their area of influence. In these areas they mobilized the peasantry and introduced land reform. By 1945 they controlled large areas of Shansi, Hopei and Shantung and about 100 million people (ten years earlier at the end of the Long March they had controlled fewer than a million people).
