Dotted-line Relationship

A special reporting relationship between two boxes in the chart. A dotted line usually indicates that one box has some measure of authority over the other box, or that they collaborate on certain types of projects.

An organizational form consisting of line and staff departments. Line departments have operational responsibility and have the right to issue orders to coordinate activities under their control. Staff departments support the work of line departments by standardizing processes across several line departments and by overseeing compliance with these. However, they have no right to issue orders to line departments. Therefore, the relationship between staff and line departments is called a 'dotted-line relationship'. For example, the IT department of a product division may be under the direct control of that division's management (implying that the division manager has the right to give orders to the IT department) and a dotted-line relationhsip with the corporate IT department (implying that it must report to the corporate department but will not accept direct orders from it).
